Continental School, 19th century. "In the Garden", oil on wood board, apparently unsigned. Genre scene painting depicting a gathering of young people in fine dress seated in a garden beneath a canopy or cupola, one young man standing and playing a flute or lute, two young ladies seated at center to either side of a second standing man, and two young ladies at right engaged in conversation, the composition contained within a shaped vignette. Panel approximately 16.125" x 15.125".
Unframed. Oxidation to verso of wood board commensurate with age. Some craquelure to areas of thicker paint. Under black light examination, several areas on in painting to matrix, principally to left of figural group, with other scattered areas throughout. Repaired wood splitting to top and right edges, the top split with some paint loss. Area of paint loss to lower right near corner.
