British School, 19th century. "Portrait of Man in Tuxedo", oil on canvas, apparently unsigned. Finely rendered painting depicting a young man at bust length on a solid dark background, the man with blonde hair brushed back off his face revealing blue eyes, strong nose, and pert lips, and wearing a formal tuxedo with high collared white shirt under black silk neck stock with bow (popular in the first half of 19th century), vest, and coat. Framed approximately 32.625" x 27.75", unframed approximately 23" x 18.25".
Painting has been relined. Under black light examination, evidence of varnish coat with greenish hue. Scattered craquelure, however, paint layer is stable. Two small areas in background on left of figure with abrasions and losses. Under black light, evidence of in-painting on left side of face and right cheek. No other signs of damage, loss or repair. Oxidation to stretcher consistent with age of painting, unable to see edge of original canvas matrix.
