Southeast Asian, 19th century possibly earlier. A polychrome and gilt bronze sculpture depicting Dhyani Buddha Amitabha (or Amitayus) cast seated in dysanasana atop a lotus throne with hands in dhyanamudra, wearing ornate robes chased with floral borders and trailing ribbons, with jewels to each wrist and ankle, elongated earlobes bearing jeweled medallions, a protruding third eye to forehead, striated hair with jewels and double bun formation with teardrop ornament at top, and a serene meditative expression to face. Remnants of red polychrome to lips and jewelry. Underside with incised lotus blossom medallion to center, back of sculpture with line of 13 calligraphic marks in the cast. Approximate height 21.375", width 15.25", depth 9.5".
Allover with gilt and polychrome losses commensurate with age. No apparent losses to structure. Under black light examination, no apparent repairs.
