Circle of Thomas Sully (American/ English, 1783-1872). "Portrait of Mother and Daughter", oil on canvas, apparently unsigned. 19th century portrait painting depicting a mother and daughter who share a great likeness seated at waist length, the mother in an open necked black dress with long chained lorgnettes to her neck and holding a bible or journal in her left hand, her daughter positioned behind her to left and wearing a white dress with sheer red silk sleeves, both with long hair pinned up in back and parted in center with curled tendrils framing their faces, the ladies set before a draped wall with a landscape in view to left side of scene. Framed approximately 39.25" x 32.75". Unframed approximately 34" x 27.25".
Painting has been relined. Under black light examination, retouches to each figure's face including nose and chin, figure's hands, and scattered areas of background including upper left and lower right. Cracquelure visible commensurate with age however paint layer appears to be stable.
