American School, 19th century. "Girl In Yellow", oil on canvas laid down on masonite, unsigned. Portrait painting depicting a toddler girl with short cropped hair in full length at center wearing a yellow dress, the girl seated in a wooden chair and, having removed her shoe, pulling her white stocking from her foot, with a dog's head at right observing the scene, the portrait set within a painted oval cartouche. Framed approximately 32.25" x 27.5", board approximately 29" x 24.25".
Oil on canvas painting laid down on board, likely cut down from larger size. Under black light examination, in-painting on background surrounding child's head, spandrels on exterior of oval medallion, minor in-painting on left foot of child. Losses, scratches and abrasions in spandrels (least severe in upper right corner). Craquelure throughout however paint layer within medallion appears to be stable.
