American School, 19th century. "Portrait of Little Girl in White", oil on canvas, apparently unsigned. Charming portrait painting depicting at center a toddler girl seated at near full length wearing a white dress off the shoulder adorned with blue silk ribbons to waist and each shoulder, the figure with white hair at ear length and porcelain complexion holding a quizzical expression to her face, the figure set before a gray blue background with horizon line near her waist. Paper remnant to verso of canvas with handwritten note "Agusta, Maine, 1853, circa 1860". Verso of stretcher also with two newspaper or catalog clippings noting similar paintings. Framed approximately 33" x 27.75". Unframed approximately 25" x 20".
Painting has been relined. Oxidation to back of stretcher. Small craquelure throughout. Under black light examination, scattered in painting around edges-- losses from rubbing on frame. Smaller but significant retouches throughout girl's face, left ribbon, and dress--particularly on left eyebrow (areas appear to be crack fills). Lower center of dress with larger retouch--likely earlier tear or rip. No other signs of damage, loss or repair.
