American School, mid 19th century. Formal portrait painting depicting a father and daughter in an interior, the father seated in wooden chair with dark red upholstery and wearing a brown coat over gray suit with vest over a white shirt and cravat, his right arm bent at the elbow and resting on a wooden table beside an open book, his daughter at left wearing a red coat over white shirt and leaning forward on her father's knee with one hand outstretched as she looks up at him through matching blue eyes, the pair set before a heavy dark red drape. Framed approximately 45.25" x 39.5". Unframed approximately 39.5" x 33.75" Provenance: From the Estate of Sam & Florence Inman, Atlanta, Georgia.
Painting has been relined. Visible craquelure commensurate with age, however, paint layer stable without signs of lifting. Under black light examination, signs of in-painting in background (particularly upper left), left side of girls face, nose, right cheek and outside edge of hair on gentleman and other areas. Left of gentleman in background space between figures with areas that look like there was a vertical tear approximately 4") and a square shaped puncture or rip. Light greenish hue visible from older varnish coat. No other signs of damage, loss or repair.
