Likely Bamileke Tribe (Cameroon, West Africa), late 19th/ early 20th century. Two cast bronze fertility idols representing a male and female figure each with flattened feet, round buttocks, bulbous belly, and egg shaped head with saucer like ears, protruding eyes, and long nose with wide nostrils over gaping almond shaped mouth with three teeth, the man with a dotted hairstyle to back of head and the female with braids, each of the figures portrayed with overtly expressed sexual organs and contained within a custom fitted lucite display case. Male idol approximately 12.625" tall, 6.875" wide, 4.75" deep. Female idol approximately 12.5" tall. 5.25" wide, 5.5" deep.
Wear to gilt and patina commensurate with age and light handling. Applied felt protective elements to bottom of feet. Scattered oxidation to metal throughout--not distracting. Minor scattered pitting (most visible on backs of thighs, knee and top and back of head). Light dirt and grime may brighten with professional cleaning. No cracks, repairs or significant losses.
