J. Gloster Ltd. (English, first half 20th century). A 1912 sterling silver cigarette case of swelled rectangular form with enamel medallion to front bearing a rendering of the ship Titanic, the hinged case opening to reveal two gold vermeil compartments, the case created in the year of the ship's first sailing and ultimate tragic sinking. Marked to interior of cover with maker's mark, city mark for Birmingham, standard mark, date mark for 1912 and "319", interior of back cover with standard mark and date mark. Inscribed to interior of back cover "41 Percy St, West Hartlepool Xmas 1943". Approximate height 3.5", width 3.125". Note: The discrepancy between date of manufacture and date of inscription can likely be attributed to the owner gifting the case to another at that time - during war and depression times, sterling items were often gifted out of a person's private collection due to financial inability to purchase a new gift.
Overall in very good condition. Minor scratches overall to case commensurate with age. Backside with two very minor dents or impressions, one at left beside clasp and one lower right of center. Interior with one or two replaced elastics, paper residue to right side below some gilt losses, and oxidation to interior hinge - hinge functioning fluidly. Medallion with slight surface scratches commensurate with age, none significant.
