Italian, circa 1735. Italian walnut inlaid bookcase secretaire with upper portion having scrolled volute cresting over a pair of glazed doors with veneer mullion detail and four upholstered shelves, the case with medallion inlaid slant front pening to reveal four small drawers and 4 small open compartments, over three inlaid and banded graduated drawers mounted with heavy brass pulls and resting on shaped bracket feet. Height 91.5", width 51", depth 22.25".
Structurally sound. Restorations throughout; glass not original. Veneer cracking and lifting. Interior of bookcase covered in grass cloth and trimmed with ribbon (see image #3). Cloth not removed for inspection. Desk lock clasp missing. Hinges replaced with patches. Desk drawers with wood replaced. Lopers replaced. Long drawer escutcheons & pulls not original to piece with patches on drawer faces (see image #8). Drawer bottoms lined in paper and not inspected however there is definite shrinkage. Bottom 2 long drawers missing locking mechanism (see image #9). Prior worm wood/insect damage (see image #7).
