18th century English red lacquered and chinoiserie decorated secretary, the upper section with shaped cornice above a pair of cupboard doors each fitted with arched mirror plate and opening to fitted interior with open compartments, 2 banks of scallop-fronted shelves over 7 pigeon holes and three short drawers over two exterior candleslides, the lower section fitted with a slant-front opening to a interior fitted with pigeon holes, small drawers and shelves and a central prospect door, the case fitted with a pair of short drawers above two graduated long drawers raised on bracket feet. The whole decorated with raised chinoiserie scenes with figures, landscape, architecture and foliage. Sticker on back, Sotheby's, New York, Lot #491. Height 80.5", width 38.4", depth 20.75".
Cracks to the upper section of the pediment. Numerous areas of paint loss and chipping. Oxidation to the mirror plates. The lock to the door has been replaced and is missing the lock clasp. One loper pull is broken. The missing molding by the other loper. The lock has been replaced on the long 2nd drawer. There is lifting and peeling. Separation of boards and shrinkage. All wear is commensurate with age and usage.
