Chinese, 18th century possibly earlier. A painted figural scene on cream silk in tones of black, red, and white depicting a courtly male at top center wearing ceremonial robe and holding an orb and flanked to right by two hairy and grotesque elder figures set within a landscape with trees, a bottom a maiden dressed in red with hand fan accompanied by many grotesque figures playing instruments such as gongs and cymbals, possibly overall depicting a wedding ceremony. Inscribed lower left with two lines of black calligraphic marks. Framed approximately 42.5" x 23.25". Sight size approximately 39.5" x 20.25". Provenance: acquired by the Estate of Dr. Woody Cobbs and Mrs. Honor Cobbs, Atlanta, Georgia.
Silk hinged to board with adhesive. Toning throughout, with horizontal waves of more pronounced toning. Edges with fraying and minor losses commensurate with age and material. Top edge with scattered pinhole losses, not distracting. Small diagonal tear to silk in lower right quadrant, not distracting. Lower hairy and grotesque elder figure with white scattered dots of white pigment to midsection, likely original to piece. Significant horizontal tear to silk at lower edge, spanning edge of board commensurate with contact from board over time, approximate length 12.5”. Two lesser horizontal tears to silk at lower right; the larger spanning approximately 3.75”; the smaller 2”. No other apparent losses or major tears.
