American, second half of 18th century. A secretary desk and bookcase, mahogany with oak and Southern yellow pine secondary wood, the bookcase comprising two glass doors decorated in Chinese-style fretwork, opening to shelf interior with three slats for shelves, back lined in painted grain, surmounting slant top secretary desk with two baize-lined supports, opening to two rows of four cubby holes over two small drawers lined in Southern yellow pine with small brass pulls over one longer drawer flanking central prospect drawer opening to two interior cubby holes decorated with conforming scalloped molding and two small drawers, surmounting four desk drawers lined in oak at sides and Southern yellow pine at bottom and back, all raised on cyma curve carved front feet. Approximate height 91", width 42.25", depth 21.5" (slant top lid closed), depth 13.25" (slant top lid open). Provenance: From the Estate of Sam & Florence Inman, Atlanta, Georgia.
We believe this piece to be a marriage, the top being English. Structurally sound. We believe the glass to be original to the top piece. Evidence of bubbles and waviness occurring to a few of the glass panels. Grain painting on interior is a later embellishment. Scattered knicks present to molding on doors. Shrinkage and vertical cracks on right side of secretary. Old repair present in the form of a horizontal crack on slant front. Also repair to left bottom of slant front. No evidence of mortise and tenon construction to top of secretary. Repairs to hinges on slant front. We do not believe the hardware to be original. Latch is missing on locking mechanism. Interior locking mechanism has been replaced. Slant from lock has also been replaced. Top and middle drawer are also missing locks (lock only present on bottom drawer). All drawers lined with adhesive paper. A few drawer blocks & drawer sliders have been replaced. Atleast one of the bracket feet have been replaced. Sides of bookcase appear to be new. Original finish to slant front.
