Continental School, 18th century. "Mythological Scene with Satyr and Putto", oil on canvas laid down on board, apparently unsigned. Large format Old Master allegorical panting depicting a figural grouping within a landscape setting with three figures, a sleeping female nude seated upon a draped rock beside a Satyr draped below the waist in red and with a small winged putto standing at her knee, the Satyr motioning to the cupid to quiet down and not awaken the sleeping Venus as he touches her knee. Framed approximately 47.75" x 51.5", unframed approximately 42" x 46".
Oil on canvas laid down on masonite board. Under black light examination, retouches throughout including cheek of woman, smaller areas on arm, larger section on torso, man's chest, and a few smaller dotted areas of in-painting on man's face and on winged putto. Additional later in-painting in drapery on figures in lower right. Some small scattered losses on edges of work from rubbing on frame. Greenish hue throughout from older varnish coat. Painting may benefit from light cleaning.
