Charles-Clement Calderon (French, 1870-1906). "Venetian Canal", oil on canvas, signed lower right "C. Calderon". Painting depicts scene over the Grand Canal in Venice, Italy with Piazza San Marco on the far bank with the St. Mark's Basilica campanile stretching up into the cloudy sky. One gondola is in the near right foreground with one further into the canal and a larger ship to the left with multicolored flags on the mast lines. Stamp on verso on canvas "Venise C.Calderon S.M." around an illustration of a canal. Framed approximately 20.75" x 27.5", unframed 15" x 21.75".
Oxidation to back of canvas commensurate with age. Tear on right side of work (on side of building on top window) running approximately 1" vertically. Paint loss to edges of work from canvas rubbing on frame. Tear visible from front of work with paint losses surrounding, patch on area visible on verso. Under black light examination, in-painting on edges, little to no inpainting throughout. Greenish hue from older varnish coat, painting would likely benefit from professional cleaning. Craquelure present however paint layer appears to be stable. Frame with significant losses and repairs throughout. Finish on frame is later.
