LEM (French, late 19th century). "Grand Casino Municipal de St. Malo"-1899, lithograph in colors, monogrammed and dated in print "LEM 99", with inscription at top center "Chemins De Fer De L'Ouest GRAND CASINO MUNICIPAL DE ST. MALO", inscribed at lower center "Saison De Juin A Octobre Trajet En 7 Heures" , inscribed at lower left margin "Imp. CHAIX (Ateliers Cheret) Rue Bergere, 20, Paris 13488 99 (encres lorilleux)". Large scale art nouveau poster depicting a jovial seaside scene in the French Riviera, with a woman in a sheer swimsuit and bonnet paddling a kayak in the foreground, dozens of bathers wading around in the calm sea waters in the mid ground and a large casino dressed in French and other flags on the sandy beach in the background. Framed approximately 57.25" x 44.75. Sight approximately 48" x 38.75". Provenance: The Estate of Richard and Merle Haber; whereby acquired by the present owner.
Poster is not laid down. Poster is linen backed for support and preservation. With scattered losses commensurate with pinholes and hanging punctures throughout all margins and at all corners. Creasing commensurate with having been previously folded and related surface loss. Scattered abrasions throughout, most noticeably to the figure's right hip. Lower right corner with repaired loss; appears corner was cut off at some point and reattached; not distracting, only noticeable under black light. No other apparent losses or repairs noted.
