French or Spanish, first half 16th century. A Gothic style gilt and polychrome carved walnut panel depicting the Resurrection of Jesus Christ, the high relief scene with a risen Christ at center emerging from his tomb clutching a tall cross in proper left hand and raising right hand in blessing as he strides forward with left foot atop a stone with three Roman guards or soldiers flanking him, one at left with round shield and sword, one at bottom right fallen before the emerging holy man, and one at right donning a helmet and raising proper right arm up over his head, the whole with remnants of black, red, green, and gilt pigment. The figural panel set within an original rectangular frame with simple carved border and iron loop hanger to top center, the frame also retaining some polychroming. Approximate height (without iron loop) 18.75", width 13.875", depth 2.125".
Provenance: Property from a Private Collection in Bilbao, Spain whereby sold by Eufemio Diez Monsalve Antiquities, Madrid, Spain in 1995 and acquired by the Estate of Dr. Woody Cobbs & Mrs. Honor Cobbs, Atlanta, Georgia. Note: this carved panel may have been part of a cathedral or church installation of the Via Dolorosa, also known as the Stations of the Cross, a common subject in the Roman Catholic church which depicts 14 locations and scenes comprising the Passion of Jesus Christ, this panel depicting the 14th station. This lot accompanied with purchase receipt dated June 5th, 1995 from Eufemio Diez Monsalve Antiquedades as well as a letter of reference from Joanna Booth of London, England, a respected authority on Medieval antiquities, acknowledging a likely date of creation as circa 1500.
