South German, early 16th century. A parcel gilt and polychrome carved wood narrative relief depicting scenes from the life of a saint with a sequence of 12 figures carved in high relief set before a rocky background, the left end with a distant city view and the right end with the reticulated arched gates of a city. The wooden carving to a later sanguine velvet stand. Overall approximate width 41.5", height 13.25", depth 13". Carving approximate width 39.5", height 11", depth 2". Provenance: acquired by the Estate of Dr. Woody Cobbs and Mrs. Honor Cobbs, Atlanta, Georgia from Christie's New York, Rockefeller Center, as lot 26 on sale 9386 "Continental Furniture, Tapestries, Works of Art and Carpets" on March 31, 2000. Note: from the Sotheby's lot notes "This relief was most probably part of an altar or tabernacle as the scenes it seems to depict, The Journey to Emmaus where the disciples Peter and Cleopas met but did not recognize their recently crucified master Christ, and the appearance of Christ to his mother Mary in the 40 days between his Crucifixion and Ascension, address the themes of the Resurrection and Salvation of the Faithful. This iconographic scheme is difficult to assign with certitude as some elements from the relief have been moved or may be missing."
