African Tribal Art: Yoruba People, Nigeria: Shrine Figure Depicting a Mother kneeling and holding forth a covered bowl, offering its edible contents to worshipers. Early 20th Century. The figure has and elaborate, dark-stained coiffure, facial scarification, and she wears protective amulets on her wrists. A female child with similar hairstyle is swathed to her back. Overall the figure has an aged, smooth patina, with evidence of libations.
