Pablo Picasso (Spanish, 1881-1973) Attributed: Les Baigneuses sur la Plage, August 2, 1928. Pen and India ink on paper mounted to black paper. Signed and dated, in pen, lower right. Framed. This drawing is accompanied by transfer of ownership notarized letters, from 1947 to the current owner, a fragment from the front of a sketchbook, and a full write up of attribution prepared by Dr. Kurt Barstow in January 2015.
An excerpt from Dr. Barstow's document:
Les baigneuses is an individual sheet taken from a sketchbook that also relates to a series of drawings carried across two other sketchbooks. We know from a fragment from the front of a sketchbook labeled by Picasso, "Dinard, 2 Aout 1928" and numbered 13 that comes with the drawing that Les baigneuses comes from a carnet or album a dessin much like the 1927 Carnet Cannes, with its pencil drawings of biomorphic figures in a slightly different, more eroticized vein. But to really understand its immediate context, it must be examined with the Carnet Paris and Carnet Dinard of 1928, some of the drawings of which are still in the Marina Picasso Collection and some of which have recently been sold at Sotheby's and Christie's.
