African Tribal Art: Pende People, Zaire, Mask made of cloth stretched over an armature of bent wooden strips. The face area is painted in abstract designs which emphasize the eyes. At the chin there is a stylized beard which juts forward. At the hairline, a fabric painted red with a bold white-and-black defined diamond design. Behind the cloth is a decorated cap surmounted with stylized coils of hair, around a central vessel. A red neck-cloth completes the back. Mid 20th century.
