Henri Matisse (French, 1869-1954) Attributed: Portrait in White Pencil on brown paper, signed with initials and full signature, unframed.
Matisse was known for both his use of colour and his fluid and original draughtsmanship. He was a draughtsman, printmaker, and sculptor, but is known primarily as a painter. Matisse is accepted as one of the most influential modern painters and crowned as the leader of Fauvism, a 20th century movement that favored a painterly style and bold, expressive use of color over the representational or naturalistic values of the Impressionist movement before.
