Hans Hartung was one of the leading abstract expressionists of his time. His rise to prominence was not straightforward, only gaining notoriety after a solo exhibition in 1947 and the transition to abstract works in the 1950s, but, once successful, he garnered extensive critical acclaim and was awarded the Grand Prix at the 1960 Venice Biennale.
