African Tribal Art: Tikar People, Cameroon: Figure of a seated woman with children. Early/Mid 20th Century, Bronze.
Maternity figure of a noble woman. Sitting on a royal stool, she holds a child on her lap, with other children acting as caryatids supporting the seat. She and the children display symbols of high lineage, with jewelry at their necks, waists, wrists and ankles. Her earrings dangle freely in over-large pierced ears. Her headdress is elaborate, and she appears to have beauty-scarifications covering her body and the body of the child she holds.
