Arthur R. Safford (American, 1900 - 1992): New England Winter Scene. Oil on academy board, signed lower left, framed.
A painter of seascapes, portraits, and figures, Safford's style is best described as romantic realism. The rendition of a subject in its precise place, light and moment is interpreted through the artist's knowledge and appreciation for its uniqueness Some of his paintings show a whimsical, fantastic interpretation of a scene but always true to the last detail.
Arthur Safford was born in Boston in 1900, graduated from the Alandale School of Art in Boston and was a student of Ernst L. Major, while attending the Massachusetts School of Art. He received a Bachelors of Arts degree from Calvin Coolidge College in 1944, and a Masters in Philosophy of Art in 1948.
