African Tribal Art: Dogon People, Mali: Horse with Two Riders (male and female) carved hardwood with the patina of libations, 19th century. Horses have been historically scarce in Dogon country. The present-day Dogon often interpret equestrian statues as depicting people who are rich and powerful, or those who desire to be so. The evidence of libations on this sculpture may indicate that the owners used it to attain social distinction.
