Incepted in 1865 by Georges Favre-Jacot, Zenith is the pioneer in the watchmaking industry. It has since become a household name within the luxury watch manufacturing industry. In 1999, the company was purchased by LVMH. Zenith has since been setting the pace through the 20th century. The founder, Favre-Jacot started watchmaking when he was only 9 years old. During his young age, he developed interest in the art and science of watchmaking. Although he did not start the company until he was 22, he was always intrigued by watches. He dropped out of school and began his full-time apprenticeship. He always harboured the ambition for creating the greatest watch ever made, however, at the time, he lacked the technology to achieve this.
A few years later, after he founded his company, Zenith became the first in-house watch manufacturer. During the quartz revolution, several mechanical watch manufacturers stopped producing their old models in favour of the new quartz technology. The company was ordered to get rid of any mechanical components, tools, stamps, and plants. One of Zenith’s watchmakers defied the orders and hid the machinery. In doing so, he saved the future of Zenith. They craft their watches in the traditional way to date. The company produced the El Primero model in 1969. El Primero means “the first'' in Spanish. Its name indicates Zenith being the first automatic chronograph manufacturer with high frequency.
