Paul Frankl

Austrian, 1886-1958. Paul Frankl was born in the capital of Austria in 1886. He was a famous furniture designer, architect, and artist. Paul traveled to America in his late 20s but returned to his hometown during WWI for a brief period. When he returned to the US, he saw that the Americans were uncertain about the concept of contemporary architecture, so he decided to promote modernist principles.

In 1925, Paul Frankl debuted his first-ever collection, a trestle-style series with a focus on hand craftsmanship. The line combined American rustic charm with contemporary style. He achieved success when he created the collection of skyscraper bookcases inspired by Manhattan’s architecture. The skyscraper collection earned popularity by the late 1920s. This design portrayed contemporary design in an aesthetic way and established himself in the history of contemporary design. Most of Paul Frankl’s furniture pieces featured intricate details and sleek lines, making for stunning contemporary interiors that were based on Art Deco style.

He is also recognized for leading the Modernist art movement in the twentieth-century.
