German, 1710. Meissen is a German porcelain manufacturing company. Johann Friedrich Bottger founded Meissen porcelain in 1709, under the patronage of Augustas Rex, the Elector of Saxony. Also known as the "Father of European Porcelain", Friedrich Bottger hired many skilled artisans to handcraft an array of dinnerware. Their process of manufacturing involved excavating the finest kaolin from the company’s own mine. This white clay is the key component for the creation of white porcelain. In 1739, a blue underglaze design known as Zwiebelmuster or onion pattern was produced by the brand and later extensively reproduced by other porcelain companies.
Friedrich Bottger ’s unique technique of throwing, casting, or forming resulted in the production of fine and intricate porcelain pieces. Bowls and cups were then thrown on potter’s spinning wheels, then pressed to create their shapes and detailing. Their trademark features crossed blue swords, which can be seen on the bottom of every Meissen porcelain. Crossed swords represent the coat of arms of the Electorate of Saxony. Today, the brand is recognized as the world's best porcelain producer. With a history of over 300 years, the company continues to manufacture their handcrafted Meissen porcelain to date.
