German, 1886-1969. The famous architect Ludwig Mies Van der Rohe was born in Germany. In his work, his quadratic lines were created gracefully and with a simplicity that characterized the International Style. He was commonly known as Mies before moving to Berlin in 1905, where he worked in his father's stone atelier. He did not have any professional architectural schooling. He began his training when he was only 15 years old with many German architects.
Ludwig also designed several architectural decorations. In 1937, when Mies arrived in the US after primarily working on projects that had never been completed. He got a position at Chicago's Armour Institute in the Architecture school as the director shortly after his arrival in the nation. In 1958, by the time of retirement after 20 years, the academy had gained international acclaim for both its teaching techniques and its school premises which were designed by him. Mexico City’s The Bacardi Building, Baltimore's One Charles Center office building, Chicago’s Federal Center, Washington, D.C’s Public Library, and Berlin's the New National Gallery are some of the beautiful marvelous buildings that Mies created during his long career.
