American, 1908 - 1978. American Jeweler, Harry Winston aka The king of diamonds had a natural eye for special stones and jewelry from an early age. At the age of 12, Winston at a pawn shop saw what no one else could. Winston witnessed a green stone like an emerald and bought it for 25 cents, whereas in a couple of days of time he sold it for $800. This natural knack for jewelry came early to him as it was his family business. After gaining much experience with his family, he moved to Newyork and started his own company called ‘The Premier Diamond Company’ at the age of 24. He was a one-man show and worked tirelessly to build his empire. By 1932, Winston’s dream comes to, and with the public demanding him to create jewelry under his own name, he opened the Harry Winston, Inc.
Winston had some of the most amazing acquisitions such as Jonker Diamond, The Stotesbury Emerald, The Briolette, and McLean Diamond throughout his carrier. Hence, he was given the name King of Diamonds by Cosmopolitan Magazine. According to his family members and friends, Winston was a very generous man with incredible values. In 1953, he donated one of the most revered diamonds in the history of jewels to the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C. This gift was none other than the Hope Diamond. With thousands of flawless designs and a grand legacy at hand, Harry Winston left the world with passion and love for his family in 1973 at the age of 82.
