He embarked on a journey to prominence by starting a small repair shoe store in Italy, and also in Santa Barbara. He had a vision to produce the most exquisite shoes in the world. In 1923, he took his first step toward becoming a well-known shoemaker by founding the Hollywood Boot Shop. He began designing shoes for celebrities such as the Maharani of Cooch Behar, Marilyn Monroe, and Eva Peron.

Salvatore Ferragamo is credited for inventing the wedge that would lead to the creation of comfortable and eye-catching shoes. Judy Garland, an American actress, was of particular interest to Ferragamo. A mutual appreciation developed between him and the actress, inspiring Ferragamo to produce one of his most famous creations. He launched the Rainbow Sandal series in 1938, which was made especially for Judy Garland.
The initial design featured kidskin leather and high platform heels wrapped in rows of multicolored suede. It's colorful, 8.5-centimeter wedge accentuated the actress' four-foot frame.
