Escada

1978, Germany. Escada began as a knitwear firm in Germany, in the 1970s. It was created by a romantic couple— Margaretha and Wolfgang Ley. The company provides a lifestyle clothing concept under the product lines called Escada and Escada Sport. Their offerings range from comfortable day-wear to elegant evening wear. Escada perfumes, eyeglasses, wristwatches, and jewelry pieces are available in addition to bags and shoes. The romantic duo debuted their earliest "Escada & Sporty Elegance" collection in 1978. This set the groundwork for a new business concept of haute couture.

They provided top-of-the-line materials, and craftsmanship at a reasonable price. Margaretha Ley rapidly developed a reputation for her use of vibrant colors, which stemmed from her childhood in Sweden. The company's rapid growth was launched by Ley's designs and her dedication towards high-quality, and luxury products. Her strong tailoring background helped create stylish and highly comfortable wear. She also had a keen eye for meticulous designs and an understanding of what women coveted. Escada's early designs were infused with bold colour schemes, patterns, rich embroideries,  and leopard prints. Such fashionable style was really clean and sleek.

Their early knitwear designs emphasized beautiful inlays and appliqués. This led to Margaretha Ley earning the prestigious Mohair Council for Excellence in Design award.
