American, 1941. Dale Chihuly's work illustrates a departure from the traditional glass-making that mainly emphasizes symmetry. To create his abstract sculptures, Chihuly uses gravitation to enable molten glass to discover its own shape naturally. His artwork is characterized by irregularities and asymmetry. With rhythmic tempos and curving patterns, many of his works included vase, basket, bowl, and other vessel forms. Chihuly earned a degree in interior design at the University of Washington in Seattle in 1965. He then studied M.S. in sculpting from the University of Wisconsin, where he was taught glassblowing by Harvey Littleton.
He also earned his M.F.A. in ceramics from Rhode Island School of Design in 1968. Dale Chihuly then went to Murano island to work at Venini Fabrica, a renowned glassblowing company. His innovation led to creation in a wide variety of patterns, colors, and textures. He also designed various other works like blankets, seaforms and chandeliers.
