England, 1795. Coalport, a porcelain manufacturing company was founded by John Rose in 1795 in Shropshire, England. John Rose began his career as a trainee at the Caughley Porcelain factory with his mentor Thomas Turner, a renowned potterer and engraver with innovative techniques for porcelain production. In the 1800s, the Coalport factory was the leader of the porcelain industry. They produced a variety of pieces in unusual shapes and patterns. In particular, pieces with strong underglaze blue and over-glazed red, green, and golden decorations, featuring the Japan designs stood out amongst others.
Around 1820, Coalport’s glazed bone china was popular as well. It was made of high quality using refined hard, white porcelain. John Rose II adapted the French Sèvres design with different variations of turquoise, claret, and mazarine blue. Following its popularity, Meissen, gilded and molded decorative porcelain with mass floral motifs was also a notable piece. Coalport was one of England's top potteries by 1830. Production of eggshell porcelain was started in 1845. A high-quality Sèvres pink fascinated many customers in 1849. In the 1860s, Coalport switched to domestic ware and Victorian ornamentation of previous unglazed china.
In the 1880s, the interest in magnificent porcelains resurfaced, and sophisticated works were produced, which has continued to this date.
