1905, French. Christian Dior revolutionized the modern fashion industry. He was born on January 21st, 1905 in a small town of France. At the age of five, Christian’s parents moved to Paris. Although he was raised in a wealthy family, his fashion career had a modest beginning. He started his career by selling fashion illustrations, which gave him an entry into the house of Lucien Long. He was working as the head designer alongside another well-known Paris fashion name Pierre Belmount. That is where he learned to design clothes. In 1946, Dior opened his own design house and revolutionized fashion with his first collection. In 1947, dior launched his first collection for the Dior house. He presented 20 looks with each look being named.
During the war years, because of fabric rationing, clothing became very subtle. But when Dior introduced the new look post World War II, clothing started representing opulence. During the 1950s, he became an internationally famous fashion designer. Some of Christian Dior’s famous clientele included Ava Gardener, Rita Hayworth and the Duchess of Windsor. He took this haute couture and expanded it into what it is today. Besides clothing, the brand offers luxury ready-to-wear, stocking, perfumes, corsets and hats. Christian Dior died of a heart attack in 1957. His assistant, Yves Saint Laurent took leadership of Dior and so, the fashion house lived on.
Though Dior’s career was very short, in just a decade, he managed to create an empire. His contributions to the fashion realm remain significant to date.
