Redware pottery was probably first produced locally during the 17th century in the Americas. The redware earthenware that was commonly found in colonial American sites during the 16th and 17th centuries is among the most common unglazed earthenware. In addition to utilitarian wares, redware pottery were also made with special functions. In earthenware pottery, redware represents a style that utilizes iron-rich clay, which turns reddish brown upon firing. Despite its mass production in Europe, redware gained popularity in the American colonies due to the abundance of clay and the affordability of the products. However, the fragility of redware makes it difficult to find today due to its easy damage.
During the 18th and 19th centuries, redware jars played a significant role in the decoration and food service of American homes. Some of the most valuable examples of this type of art are the figurines and mantel ornaments modeled after English Staffordshire China objects. Objects such as figurines, pipes, or coin banks were often painted red, green, or yellow instead of rust.
Several types of redware jars are commonly encountered when classifying redware pottery.
Lead Glazed Jars
Usually, the pottery may have a glossy finish in blacks, reddish browns, dark browns, and even greens. As with plain redware, the body of this vessel is red and is useful for everyday items, such as bowls and crocks.
Plain/Unglazed Jars
This type of redware lacks a glaze and is reddish, similar to bricks or terracotta tiles. Generally, the vessels are utilitarian and have thick walls. Usually, plain redware is used for flowerpots.
Trailed Slipware Jars
Trailed slipware has a white slip decoration. Afterwards, the slip is glazed with clear lead, resulting in a yellowish hue. Simple geometric designs are often found on the body, which is red in color and often thick in texture.
Sgrafitto Jars
In contrast to trailed slipware, sgraffito is the opposite. The surface is coated in white slip and decorations are carved into it, creating a yellowish hue. There is often more detail in the incised decoration compared to trailed slipware vessels, including birds and floral designs.
