British, b. 1962. Sarah Lucas is a contemporary British artist known for her satirical sculptures, paintings and photographs. Lucas frequently exemplifies British culture and stereotypes by incorporating puns and bawdy humor. By employing found objects like food, furniture and even intimate body parts, she evokes suggestive artworks about gender, sexuality and death. In “Au Naturel” (1994), one of her early works, she portrayed a couple in bed by placing two melons and a pail next to cucumber and two oranges on a worn mattress. Born in 1962 in London, the artist is a member of the Young British Artist (YBA), an art group that emerged during the 1990s.
