German, 1879–1940. The Swiss-born artist, Paul Klee, was an ambidextrous painter and an inspiration to his students at the Bauhaus, where he was revered for his pictorial language and innovative pedagogy. His works and lessons in color theory would greatly impact the later generations of artists. Klee’s genius prevailed in his use of humor and fantasy which he fused into his subjects conveying a playful sense of absurdity, like in his 1922 painting “Twittering Machine”. Klee took great inspiration from children’s art, the references of which are evident in his own aloof style. During the later years of his career, he transitioned from precise linework to thicker painted surfaces and simplified compositions with fewer, distinct forms.
