French, 1822 – 1912. Mathurin Moreau was a prominent 19th-century traditional academic style sculptor. The artist was born on November 18, 1822, in Dijon, France. His father was Jean-Baptiste Moreau and his brothers Hippolyte and Auguste were all sculptors. After 1848, Moreau started showing his artworks at the Salon and received great acclaim. He then started working at the Val d'Osne Foundry. Mathurin Moreau’s sculptures soon became monumental. While working at the Val d'Osne Foundry, Mathurin Moreau’s artwork, a large fountain received a Gold Medal at the World’s Fair.
Queen Victoria has also been gifted the four-season statues by the artist. Moreau’s collaborations with Val d'Osne lasted until 1879.
