Although the artist did not finish primary schooling, he was accepted at the Cooper Union when he was 15 and started studying painting under famous American mural painter William de Leftwich Dodge. While studying arts, he also worked at an engraving firm in Brooklyn. Later he went to attend the National Academy of Design. It was here that etcher William Auerbach Levy introduced him to etching techniques.
