British, 1922–2011. Contemporary artist Lucian Freud was born in Berlin, Germany and was the grandson to eminent psychologist Sigmund Freud and son of architect Ernst Freud. He was one of the major figurative painters of the 20th century. His works, mostly portraits and nudes, several of them being his own or of members of his family and friends, were psychologically complex and intricately shaped lifelike. Evolving his style throughout his 70 years of painting from realistic to impasto, his focus in translating his direct perceptions into his work, however, remained. Sometimes called a realist, he was known for a highly individual style and a clinical impassiveness while illustrating his subjects.
