Spanish, 1887-1927. José Victoriano González-Pérez, better known as Juan Gris, was a Spanish painter of international repute. Before Gris began painting seriously and popularized his hallmark style which he termed Analytical Cubism, he worked as a satirical cartoonist. His circle of friends included distinctive artists of the Cubism movement, some of who were also his mentors. His background in math and physics lent his paintings a highly technical resemblance. The artist also experimented with the Pointillism technique of using small dots and patches to compose his paintings.
