American, 1876-1965. Jane Peterson was a painter famous for her Impressionist style featuring landscapes and still lifes. Peterson was also an Expressionist painter and inculcated patches of brilliant colors meant to create a light effect and depicted surprising moments in her artworks. The painter was born Jennie Christine Peterson in Illinois on November 12, 1876. In 1893, while attending the World’s Fair held in Chicago, Peterson was acquainted with the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn and enrolled there. In 1901, Peterson graduated from Pratt Institute and traveled to Europe. During her time in Europe, she studied art from artists Joaquín Sorolla and Jacques-Emile Blanche. Up to 1912, the artist had many followers and started tutoring students for watercolor painting at the Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore and the Art Students League in New York. During this time, Peterson was also a part of a prominent group of artists in America, including Maurice Prendergast, Childe Hassam, and John Singer Sargent. In 1925, according to The New York Times, Peterson was titled one of the first women painters of New York. Throughout her life, the artist lived near the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
Peterson died on August 14, 1965, in Kansas. Today, Jane Peterson’s paintings are on display at the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington, D.C., the San Diego Museum of Art, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, among others.
