French, 1908–2004. French photographer and filmmaker, Henri Cartier-Bresson, is best known as a pioneer of street photography. Considered as one of the most influential figures in the history of photography, his black-and-white works are among iconic images of the 20th-century. In 1947, he co-founded of Magnum Photos and in 1952, he published a collection of the photographs focusing on the first decade of his career in a book titled, “The Decisive Moment.” In his book, Cartier-Bresson wrote that photography should be “the simultaneous recognition in a fraction of a second of the significance of an event as well as a precise organisation of forms.”
