Luxembourgish American, 1879 –1973. Edward Jean Steichen was a famous photographer, curator, and painter celebrated as one of the prolific photographers in history. The photographer was also an influential personality contributing towards the development of different techniques in photography. He was also the director of photography at The Museum of Modern Art from 1945 to 1962. His well-known photographs include The Flatiron (1904), where Steichen experiments with coloring methods created by the Lumière Brothers from France.
Edward Steichen was born in Bivange in Luxembourg on March 27, 1879, and moved to the United States with his family in 1880. The artist worked as a lithographer and also tried painting. Steichen began photography experiments during the 1890s. In 1900 Edward Steichen's photography caught the eye of photographer Alfred Stieglitz. The photographer, along with Alfred Stieglitz, co-founded the journal called Camera Work. He was also appointed the U.S. Naval Photographic Institute's director during World War II. While serving as the director of The Museum of Modern Art, Steichen also held a notable exhibit, The Family of Man, consisting of more than 500 photographs from almost 68 nations. Edward Steichen's artwork is known for the transformation of photography into art. From 1923 to 1938, the photographer was the photography head at the Condé Nast magazines like Vanity Fair and Vogue. During this time, he also worked for advertising firms like J. Walter Thompson. The photographer died in 1973 while he resided in Redding in Connecticut. Today, Edward Steichen's photography is on display at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., the J.
