American, b.1954. Donning wigs, costumes and makeup, Cindy Sherman protrayed cliched actresses in her black-and-white photographs, showcasing how men viewed women in the 1970s. Sherman continued to use her images to confront the stereotypes of women depicted in popular culture into the 1980s and expanded into female roles in fine art and pornography with the use of mannequins, dolls and prostetics. Sherman moved into color photography which helped her to explore the grotesque and profane side of life by experimenting with different hues and lighting, always challenging the viewer to think outside of social norms and develop their own definition of sex and beauty.
