French, 1899-1984. Photography Gyula Halasz garnered the nickname of Brassai after his hometown in Hungary. He was also known as the "eye of Paris" for showing the gritty side of the city with candid shots of streets and bars at night. These images were sometimes considered scandalous as he captured prostitutes, amorous couples, and hoodlums. Brassai had a way of showing the beauty in the banal of city. He published several books of his work which earned him international notiarity.
