American, 1874 – 1946. Arnold Friedman was a Modernist painter famous for his skills among today's art historians. The artist started pursuing painting as a profession later in his life and devoted entirely to art from 1933 when he was 59. The painter was born in Corona in Queens. Friedman worked as a clerk at a post office for nearly forty years and continued to paint on weekends and evenings. The artist created murals for the Federal Arts Project for Chalfonte-Haddon Hall, located at Atlantic City in New Jersey. He also painted murals for post office structures located in Warrenton in Georgia, Orange in Virginia, and Kingstree in South Carolina. The artist's painting methods went through multiple changes throughout his career.
In 1905 the artist started his career under artists like Kenneth Hayes Miller and Robert Henri in New York at the Art Students League. The artists influenced Arnold Friedman during the early years of his career and focused on representational subjects. During his time as a student at the Art Students Leagues, the painter realized he did not fit in as a postal clerk. Friedman took a leave for six months in 1909 from his job as a post office clerk and went to Paris to pursue arts. During his time in Paris, the painter was exposed to Impressionism and was moved by Pisarro's Pointillism. He portrayed the influence of Impressionism and Post-Impressionism in his art upon returning to New York.
During his visit to France, the painter acquainted himself with Cubism. Friedman practiced Cubism for a short period. Influenced by the European artists, Friedman created his distinct painting style.
