Russian- French, 1885-1950. Painter Alexandre Altmann was born in Sobolevka, Ukraine. Alexandre Altmann was famous for his landscape paintings, Parisian street scenes, still lifes, and seascapes. The prolific painter had a signature Impressionist style featuring attractive colors and deeper textures. When he was 11, Altmann fled to Odessa and worked multiple jobs as a shoemaker, tailor, grocery seller, and metal worker. Upon noticing his talent and draughtsmanship, Vlas Mikailovich Doroshevich started teaching art to Altmann and encouraged him.

He later moved to Vienna in 1903 and later went to Paris in 1909. During his time in Paris, Altmann started studying at the La Ruche and worked as a laborer. Due to poverty and hunger, the painter was taken to Rothschild Hospital. Here, the artist created a painting of a fellow patient. After selling the artwork to the hospital guardian, Altmann secured a place at the Académie Julian. During his time in Paris, the artist associated himself with Cubist and Fauvist artists. Along with fellow artists, Altmann fled to France in 1914. In Moscow, Altmann met Marc Chagall and Wassily Kandinsky.
